EPIGRAPHIA INDICA

698.─Ep. Ind. Vol. IV. p. 139. Pañchapâṇḍavamalai Tamil Jaina rock inscription of the 8th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.), containing an order of the Lâṭarâja Vira-Chôḷa, the son of Pugalvippavargaṇḍa.[1]

699.─Ep. Ind. Vol. V. p. 44, and Plate. Śuchîndram (Sthâṇunâtha temple) Tamil inscription of the 10th[2] year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.), dated ‘ in the month of Karkaṭaka with which (this) year began.’

700.─ South-Ind. Inscr. Vol. I. No. 146, p. 140. Conjeeveram (Kailâsanâtha temple) fragmentary Tamil inscription of the 12th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman who destroyed the ships (at) Kândaḷûr-Śâlai ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

701.─South-Ind. Inscr. Vol. III. No. 2, p. 4, and Plate. Ukkal (Vishṇu temple) Tamil inscription of the 13th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman who destroyed the ships (at) Śâlai ;[3] (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

Ukkal (Vishṇu temple) Tamil inscription of the 14th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman who, having destroyed the ships (at) Śâlai,[3] conquered Vêṅgaiññâḍu (Vêṅgai-nâḍu), Gaṅga-pâḍi, Taḍiya-vali (Taḍigaipâḍi) and Nuḷamba-pâḍi ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

Śuchîndram (Sthâṇunâtha temple) Tamil inscription of the month of Vṛiśchika of the 14th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman who, having destroyed the ships (at) Kândaḷûr-Śâlai, conquered Gaṅga-pâḍi, Nuḷamba-pâḍi, Taḍîga-vaḷi (Taḍigai-pâḍi) and Vêṅgai-nâdu ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

704.─South-Ind. Inscr. Vol. III. No. 19, p. 29. Mêlpâḍi (Sômanâthêśvara temple) Tamil inscription of the 14th year (of the reign) of the glorious Mummuḍi-Chôḷadêva[4] (alias)king Râjarâja Râjakêsarivarman who . . . was pleased to destroy the ships (at) Kândaḷûr-Śâlai, conquered Gaṅga-pâḍi, Nuḷamba-pâḍi, Taḍiya-pâḍi (Taḍigai-pâḍi), Vêṅgai-nâḍu and Kuḍamalai-nâḍu (i.e. Malabar), and deprived the Śeliyas (i.e. Pâṇḍyas) of (their) splendour ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

705.─Ep. Ind. Vol. V p. 45, Plate. Śuchîndram (Sthâṇunâtha temple) Tamil inscription of the 15th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman, described as in No. 704 ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.) :─

‘ In the year month of Kanyâ.’

706.─Ep. Ind. Vol. V. p. 197. Date of a Maṇimaṅgalam (Vaikuṇṭha-Perumâḷ temple) Tamil inscription of the 15th year (of the reign) [of the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.[ :─

‘ In the 15th year . . . on the day of Hasta, which corresponded to a Thursday and to the tenth tithi of the first fortnight of the month of Ṛishabha.’

[Ś. 922] : 15th May A.D. 1000 ;[5] but the day was a Wednesday, not a Thursday.

707.─Ep. Ind. Vol. V. p. 46, and Plate. Shêrmâdêvi (Râmasvâmin temple) unfinished Tamil inscription of the 15th year (of the reign) of king Râjarâjakêsarivarman, described as in No. 704 ; (i.e. the Chôḷa king Râjarâja I.).

[5] That the above is the proper equivalent of the date follows from the fact that Râjarâja’s reign commenced between the 25th June and the 25th July A.D. 985 ; see above, No. 696, note.
