8 Fleet corrects Kaurāḷaka into Kairaḷaka, for which, he thinks, the word in the text is obviously a mistake.
He, no doubt, says that “it is easy to see how the engraver, or perhaps the writer from whose draft he engraved,
formed kaurāḷaka, by mistake for kairaḷaka, through a stroke on the right of the k in kai and of the ra.” One slip
of stroke is intelligible, but not two, which are presupposed in the engraving of Kaurāḷaka, wrongly for kairaḷaka.
It is true that Fleet also maintains that “though kurāla occurs in the sense of ‘a light bay horse with black legs,’
it is not known as the name of a country or a city.” But it has been pointed out (see above, Introduction, p, 15)
that this Kurāḷa can easily be identified with Kunāḷa of the Aihoḷe inscription (Ep. Ind., Vol. VI, pp. 1 ff.) and
both with the modern Kōllēru (Collair) lake.
