No. 252

(A. R. No. 529 of 1928-29)

VARĀṄGA, KARKAL TALUK, SOUTH KANARA DISTRICT

Slab (No. 2) set up in the northern verandah of the outer prākāra of
the Nēmīśvara-basti

Immaḍi Bhairava, 1522 A.D.

This record, both in Sanskrit and Kannaḍa verse and prose, gives a genealogical account of the Pombuchchha family from Jinadatta and registers a gift of a village (name not clear) which was renamed Bhairava-pura, excluding the lands originally granted to god Mahādēva of Keravase, for the worship of and offerings to god Ādināthasvāmi in the Nēmitīrthēśvara Chaityālaya of Varāṅga, by the chief mahāmaṇḍalēśvara Immaḍi Bhairavarasa, son of Bommaladēvī, who was ruling from Keravase. The gift was made over to Dēvēndrakīrti- bhaṭṭāraka, the religious teacher of Kundakundānvaya, Balātkṛiti-gaṇa and Śaradā-gachchha, whose genealogical account also is given. The achievements of this teacher is recounted.

It is dated Śaka 1444, Chitrabhānu, Chitra ba. 12, Monday. The details correspond to 1522 A.D., Mach 12 when the month was intercalary (adhika Chaitra).
