EPIGRAPHIA INDICA

20th January A.D. 1562, with a lunar eclipse, visible in India ; but the day was a Tuesday, not a Monday ; see Ind. Ant. Vol. XXIV. p. 9, No. 159.

532.─Ś. 1493.─ As. Res. Vol. XX. p. 28. Translation of a Vijayanagara inscription of the time of Sadâśivarâya :─

‘ In the year of Śâlivâhana 1483, corresponding to the year Durmati, in Chaitra sudi-pañchamî, Śanivâr, . . . in the season of Makara-saṁkrânti-puṇyakâla.’ The date is irregular. 533.─Ś. 1482 (? for 1485).─PSOCI. No. 246 ; Mysore Inscr. No. 129, p. 228. Hâsan Kanarese inscription of Sadâśivarâya, residing at Vidyânagara, and of Kṛishṇappa-Nâyaka, the son of Bayappa-Nâyaka :─

(L. 5).─Śâlivâhana-Śaka-varsha 1482(?)ya varttamânakka(kke) nilâva[1] Rudhirôdgâri-saṁvatsarada Śrâvaṇa-śu 13 Sômavâra [2]puṁṇyakâladalli.

For Rudhirôdgârin = Ś. 1485 the date would correspond to Monday, 2nd August A.D. 1563.

534.─Ś. 1488.─ South-Ind. Inscr. Vol. I. Nos. 43-46, p. 70 ff. Four Tamil inscriptions at Arappakkam, Ariyûr, Arumbaritti and Śaduppêri (all near Vêlûr), of the reign of Sadâśivarâya ; recording grants made by the Mahâmaṇḍalêśvara Tirumalarâja (I., the younger brother of Râmarâja II. of Karṇṭa[3]) at the request of Śinna-Bommu-Nâyaka of Vêlûr :[4]

‘ On Wednesday, the twelfth lunar day of the latter half of the month of Kumbha of the Akshaya-saṁvatsara, which was current after the Śaka year 1488.’

535.─Ś. 1497.[5] South-Ind. Inscr. Vol. I. Nos. 47-49, p. 73 ff. Three Tamil inscriptions at Śattuvâchêri, Śamaṅginellûr and Perumai (all near Vêlûr), of the reign of the Mahâmaṇḍalêśvara Śrîraṅgarâya II.[3] (usually described as I.) ; recording grants made by Kṛishṇappa-Nâyaka Ayyan at the request of Śinna-Bommu-Nâyaka of Vêḷûr :[6]

‘ On Wednesday, the thirteenth lunar day of the dark half of the month of Makara of the Yuva-saṁvatsara, which was current after the Śaka year 1497.’

The date is irregular ; see Ind. Ant. Vol. XXIV. p. 17, No. 200.

536.─Ś. 1500─PSOCI. No. 242 ; Mysore Inscr. No. 121, p. 220. Bêlûr Kanarese inscription of the reign of the Mahârâjâdhirâja Vîrapratâpa Śrîraṅgarâya II.[3] (usually described as I.), recording a grant by Kṛishṇapa-Nâyaka, [the son of] Veṅkaṭâdri-Nâyaka :─

‘ Sâlivâhana-Śaka 1500 or 1560 (in figures, l. 10), the Bahudhânya saṁvatsara ; Saturday, the eight day of the dark fortnight of Śrâvaṇa ;’ (Mys. Inscr. : ‘ the year 1500 ’). Saturday, 26th July A.D. 1578.[7]

537.─Ś. 1508.─PSOCI. No. 28 ; Mysore Inscr. No. 140. p. 252. Dêvahaḷḷi plates of Śrîraṅgarâya II.[8] (usually described as I.) :─

(L. 114).─ Khyât-âṁg-âṁbara-bâṇ-êṁdu-gaṇitê Śaka-vatsarê | vatsarê Târaṇ-âbhikhyê mâsi Kârttika-nâmani || Pakshê valakshê puṇyâyâṁ paurṇimâyâṁ mahâtithau | sômôparâga-samayê.8
