KANYĀNA, COODAPOOR TALUK, SOUTH KANARA DISTRICT

Slab (No. 2) set up in Gubbukōṇe Gōpālakṛishṇa temple

[Mallikārjuna], 1458 A.D.

This is dated Śaka 1379 (current), Dhātu, Māgha śu. 5, Thursday. In the cyclic year Dhātu the tithi occurred on 1457 A.D., January 30 when the weekday was Sunday. If the year is taken to be Īśvara the given details regularly correspond to 1458, A.D., January 19 which appears to be the intended date.

It registers an agreement made between the chief residents of the village, the fifty-two members of the jagat, the twelve jananis and Vallabhadēva-arasa according to which the villagers of Kanyana alias Rājāḍi in Hārunāḍu were to pay the latter the specified amounts annually. The village was gifted to him as umbaḷi by the king on the occassion of his birthday. when Bhānappa-Voḍeya was governing Bārakūru-rājya. The king is called Prauḍha Dēvarāya in this record.
