TEXT OF INSCRIPTIONS

(A. R. No. 519 of 1928-29)

HACHAVEṬṬU, KARKALA TALUK, SOUTH KANARA DISTRICT

Slab set up in a field called Kallagaṇḍa

Virūpāksha, 1466 A.D.

This record is dated Śaka 1326, Tāraṇa, Makara 6, Thursday, solar eclipse. These details correspond to 1406 A.D., January 1. But this date is very early for Virūpāksha. If the Śaka year is a mistake for 1386, then the date falls in the reign period of this king, the tithi corresponding to 1465 A.D., January 1, when the weekday was Tuesday. No eclipse occurred on that day. In the next year (1406 A.D., Pārthiva) the tithi occurred on January 2, Thursday, though even on that date the said eclipse did not occur. The latter might be the intended date.

It registers a gift of land Mahādēva of Yiṭṭāla, for worship, burning a perpetual lamp and feeding 36 brāhmaṇas daily in the month of Siṁha, by Kānteṇa Mārāḷuva alias Koṁṇa.

1 ಶಕವರುಷ 1326

2 ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಶ್ರೀ ನಮಸ್ತುಂಗ ಸಿರಶ್ಚುಂಬಿ ಚಂದ್ರಚಾಮರ ಚಾ –

3 ರವೇ [|*] ತ್ರೈಲೋಕ್ಯ ನಗರಾರಂಭ ಮೂಲಸ್ತಂಭಾಯ ಸಂಭುವೇ ||

4 ಶ್ರೀ ಮನು ಮಹಾರಾಜಾಧಿರಾಜ ರಾಜಪರಮೇಶ್ವರ ಶ್ರೀವೀರ ವಿರೂಪಾಕ್ಷರಾಯ-

5 ರು ರಾಜ್ಯವ ಪ್ರತಿಪಾಲಿಸುವ ತಾರಣ ಸಂವತ್ಸರದ ಮಕರಮಾಸ [ಆ] –

6 ರನೆಯ ಗುರುವಾರದ ಸೂರ್ಯ್ಯಗ್ರಹಣದ ಪುಂಣ್ಯಕಾಲದಲು ಕಾಂತೆಣ ಮಾ-

7 ರಾಳುವರಾದ ಕೊಂಣರು ಧರ್ಮ್ಮಾರ್ಥಕಾಮ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಸಿದ್ದ್ಯರ್ಥ್ಥವಾಗಿ ದೇವರಿಗು
............ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮರಿ –

8 ಗು ಮಾಡಿದ ಧರ್ಮದ ಕ್ರಮವೆಂತೆಂದಡೆ ಯಿಟಲದ ಬಯಲೊಳೆಗೆ ಕೊಳಕೆ ಯೆಂ-

9 ಬ ಗದ್ದೆಯಿಂದ ಕಿಳಗೆದಿರಿಲ್ಲಾವೆಂಬಯಲ ಗದ್ದೆಗಳು ಬಿತ್ತುವ ಠಾಉ ಯಿ . .

10 ತ ಆಯ[ರು] . . ಡಿ ಕುಂಮರಿಯೆಂಬ ಬಯಲೊಳಗೆ ಬಿತ್ತುವಗದ್ದೆ ನಾಲ್ಕು . .

11 ಯಳು ಮೂಡೆ ಅಂತು ಮೂವತಯೆರಡು ಮೂಡೆಗದ್ದೆಯನು ಯಿಟ್ಟಿಲದ ಶ್ರೀಮ-

12 ಹಾದೇವರಿಗೆ ದಿನಪ್ರತಿ ವೊಪ್ಪಾನೆ ಉ[ಕ್ಕುದತಿ] ಅಕ್ಕಿಯ ನಿವೇದ್ಯವನು ನಡಸುವರು

13 ಸಿಹ್ವಮಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ಭೋಜನ ಮುವತಾಱು ಮಂದಿ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮರಿಗೆ ದಿನಂ ಪ್ರ –

14 ತಿ ಸಿಂಹಮಾಸದಲು ಸಾವಿರದ ಹದಿನಾಕ್ಕು ಮಂದಿಗೆ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ –

15 ರಿಗೆ ನಡಸುವುದು ಬೇಕಾದ ಮೇಲು ವೆಚ್ಚವನು ಯಿ ಭೂಮಿಯಿಂ
