EPIGRAPHIA INDICA
KALIDINDI GRANT OF EASTERN CHALUKYA RAJARAJA I
to four generations of the family of Bētana-bhaṭṭa,1 the composer of the inscription. Though
nothing is known of the first two members of the family, Bhīma or Bhīmana-bhaṭṭa was a scholar
and poet who flourished under Vimalāditya. He was the composer of the new Eastern Chāḷukya
praśasti embodied in the Raṇastipūṇḍi grant.2 on his death his son, Bētana-bhaṭṭa, appears to
have succeeded him in his office. In point of style and excellence of diction, the present record
is superior to the Kōrumelli plates. The passage in which the author describes the greatness of
Rājēndra Chōḷa is majestic and dignified ; and his description of the battle of Kalidiṁḍi also is
vivid.
