Rock Edict VI[1]

1 (I) [Devānaṁpiye] Piyadasi lāj[ā] hevaṁ āha [2][|*] (II) [atikaṁtaṁ aṁtalaṁ] no hūta[3]- puluve savaṁ kālaṁ aṭha-ka[ṁ]me paṭive[da]nā [|*] (III) se mamayā hevaṁ kaṭe [|*] (IV) [savaṁ] kālaṁ
2 [adamānasā[4] o]lodhana[si][5] [gabh-āgālasi] [va]chasi vinitasi uy[ā]nasi savatā paṭive[dakā] a[ṭhaṁ] ja[nasa] paṭi[ve]dayaṁtu me [|*] (V) savatā cha [janasa] a[ṭhaṁ]

7 tathā cha me puta-natāle palakama[ṁ]tu sava-loka-hitāye [|*] (XIV) dukale chu kho iyaṁ aṁna[tā] agen[ā] palakamenā [|*]

TRANSLATION

(I) Thus saith king Priyadarśin, Beloved of the Gods.
(II) Formerly, in the ages gone by, there was no transaction of state –business and no reporting (of incidents to the king) at all hours.
(III) So I have made the following (arrangement).
(IV) The reporters should report to me the affairs of the people at any time and place, whether I am engaged in eating (or) in the harem (or) in the bed-chamber (or) on a promenade (or) in the carriage (or) on the march.[14]
(V) And I am now attending to people’s affairs at all places.

[5] The word me is added before this word in the other versions.
[6] According to Chakravarti, these letters are partly visible on the rock.
[7] Chakravarti :[ho]ti vedataviya-mate.
[8] Chakravarti : uṭhāṇasi. He also reads uṭhāne in line 5 (X) and aṭhāye in line 3 (VI).
[9] Chakravarti : “These letters are faintly visible on the rock.”
[10] Chakravarti : “The letter is indistinct on the rock.”
[11] Chakravarti : Svagaṁ.
[12] The word aṭhāye is omitted here.
[13] Cakravarti : ºṭhitik[e].
[14] The word uyāna (Sanskrit udyāna) is generally taken to mean ‘ a pleasure garden.’
