EPIGRAPHIA INDICA

I may add that between A.D. 1146 and 1173 the only days for which the original date would be perfectly correct are Wednesday, the 27th July A.D. 1155, and Wednesday, the 23rd July A.D. 1169, but that with neither of these days could the other dates of Râjarâja II. be reconciled.

The date would appear to show that the reign of Râjarâja II. could not have commenced after (approximately) the 11th July A.D. 1146.

E.─ KULOTTUNGA-CHOLA III.

107.─ In the Vêdâraṇyêśvara temple at Vêdâraṇyam.[1]

1 [Sva]sti śrî [||*] T[i]r[i]buvanachchakkaravattigaḷ śrî-Kulôttu[ṅga-Śôla- dêvar]kku yâṇḍu n[â]-
2 lâvadu Mîna-nâyarru [pû*]rvva-pakshattu pañjamiyum V[i]yâla-kkilamai- yum per[ra*]
3 [U]rôśaṇi-nâḷ.

“ In the fourth year (of the reign) of the emperor of the three worlds, the glorious Kulôttuṅga-Chôḷadêva,─ on the day of Rôhiṇî, which corresponded to a Thursday and to the fifth tithi of the first fortnight of the month of Mîna.”

The date corresponds to Thursday, the 11th March A.D. 1182, which was the 17th day of the month of Mîna, and on which the 5th tithi of the bright half (of Chaitra[2]) ended 9 h. 25 m., while the nakshatra was Rôhiṇî for 20 h. 21 m. or 21 h. 1 m., after mean sunrise.

108.─ In the Vâlîśvara temple at Râmagiri.[3]

1 Svasti śrî [||*] Tir[i]buvanach[cha][kka*]ravattigaḷ śrî-[Vî]rarâśê[nda]ra- Śô[la]dêvar[k]ku yâṇḍu â[râ]vadu Karkaḍaga-nâyarru apara-pakkshat[ta[4] dû]vâdaśiyum [Vi]yâla-kkilamaiyum perra Urôśa[ṇi]-nâ[ḷ].

“ In the sixth year (of the reign) of the emperor of the three worlds, the glorious Vîrarâjêndra-Chôḷadêva,─ on the day of Rôhiṇî, which corresponded to a Thursday and to the twelfth tithi of the second fortnight of the month of Karkaṭaka.”

The date undoubtedly corresponds to Thursday, the 5th July A.D. 1184, which was the 9th day of the month of Karkaṭaka, and on which the nakshatra was Rôhiṇî the whole day. But the tithi which ended on this day, 18 h. 7 m. after mean sunrise, was the 11th, not the 12th, tithi of the dark half (of Âshâḍha).─ The result shows that in the original the 12th tithi has been wrongly quoted instead of the 11th.

The result would also show that the reign of Kulôttuṅga-Chôḷa III. could not have commenced before (approximately) the 8th July A.D. 1178.

109.─ In the Vâlîśvara temple at Râmagiri.[5]

1 Svasti śrî [||*] Tiribuvanachchakkarava[r]ttigaḷ śr[î]-Vîrarâśênd[i]ra-Sô[la]- . . . . . . ḍu ârâvadu Karkaḍaga-nâ[ya]rru apara- pakshattu [du]vâ[da]śa(śi)y[n]m Viyâla-kkilamaiyum perra Urôśa[ṇ]i-[6]nâḷ.
