EPIGRAPHIA INDICA

56 m., and by the Brahma-siddhânta for 1 h. 58 m., after mean sunrise. The only difficulty is, that by our Tables the 8th tithi of the [dark] half (of Kârttika) had ended 0 h. 26 m. before mean sunrise of the Thursday, and that therefore we should have expected the writer to quote the 9th tithi, not the 8th.

“ In the 15th year (of the reign) of the glorious king Mâravarman alias the emperor of the three worlds, the glorious Sundara-Pâṇḍyadêva, who took the Chôḷa country and was pleased to perform the anointment of heroes and the anointment of victors at Muḍigoṇḍaśôlapuram,─ on the day of Viśakhâ, which corresponded to a Tuesday and to the thirteenth tithi of the second fortnight of the month of Dhanus.”

I have previously[5] found that Mâravarman Sundara-Pâṇḍya I. commenced to reign between (approximately) the 29th March and the 4th September A.D. 1216. With that commencement of his reign this date of the 15th year regularly corresponds to Tuesday, the 3rd December A.D. 1230, which was the 8th day of the month of Dhanus, and on which the 13th tithi of the dark half (of Mârgaśira) commenced 4 h. 53 m., while the nakshatra was Viśâkhâ, by the equal space system and according to Garga for 10 h. 30 m., and by the Brahma-siddhânta for 5 h. 55 m., after mean sunrise.

C.─ MARAVARMAN KULASEKHARA I.

47.─ In the Tyâgarâjasvâmin temple at Tiruvârûr.[6]
