INSCRIPTIONS OF THE PARAMARAS OF MALWA
UJJAIN COPPER-PLATE INSCRIPTION OF BHOJADEVA
appears to be a territorial unit lying to the west of this stream, as Ujjayinī-paśchima-pathaka of the
Dēpālpur grant of Bhōja, which we shall see below, The gift village Vīrāṇaka (1.7.), as stated
by Kirtane in his article, “no longer exists in Mālwā’’,
[1]
but the map at my disposal shows a place
Berwan, which is situated about 30 kms. straight north-west of Ujjain and now a railway-station
near Nāgdā ; it is not known if Virāṇaka of that time may have changed to this name throught the
intermediate step of Vīraṇ. Śrīvāḍa and Vēllavalla from where the donee is said to have hailed
(1.17) cannot be identified for want of any clue.

Kirtane, op. cit., p. 50.
From photolithographs facing pp. 52-54 in Ind. Ant., Vol. VI.
[3] Denoted by a symbol.
[4] This akshara appears as न.
[5] By scribal error this akshara appears as द.
[6] The daṇḍas are superfluous.
[7] The curve of the ī-mātrā is not carved and sandhi is not made with the preceding म्रा.
[8] This and some other daṇḍas below are redundant, which need not be mentioned separately.
[9] what is intended here by the word कल्पित is not definitely known. This term occurs also in the Kadamba.
padraka grant of Naravarman of V.S. 1110 and in his son Yaśōvarman’s grant of V.S. 1192 ; and while
publishing the former of these, in the Ep. Ind., Vol. XX. N.P. Chakravarty remarked that possibly the word
has to be taken in the sence of ‘settled or fixed’. And the whole expression may perhaps here refer to the
donated village, the halas of which were fixed’, and also entered in लेख्य i.e., the government documents
I am, however, unable to explain, in this case, the use of the seventh case in the word लेख्य.
[10] The sign-manual, which is engraved on the right corner of the first plate, should not be taken to break the continuity of the writing.
[11] The meaning of this word I cannot make out. Kirtanē translates it as ‘inhabitant of साधसुरसंग-, but to me
it appears to be a mistake for धरसुर, a Brāhmaṇa, or, as Hultzsch has suggested, in Ep. Ind ., Vol. XI,
p. 184. n. 4, we may have to read here विनिर्ग्गत(॥)भूसुरसंग. For the double daṇḍas which are as carved
here. cf. above, 1.2, after जटाः.
